Gunmen Open Fire On Abia Governor Otti’s Advance Team In Imo

Gunmen on Tuesday opened fire on an advance team belonging to the Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, along the Umuowa–Ihite axis in Imo State.

Starnews gathered that the three-man team was travelling to the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport in Owerri when the attackers struck shortly before the airport junction.
Despite the sudden assault, members of the team escaped without injuries.

In a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, the Abia State Government dismissed rumours that Otti’s main convoy was involved in the attack.
“The three-member team was en route to Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport, Owerri, when the attack occurred shortly before the airport junction,” the statement read.

Ukoha clarified that Governor Otti was nowhere near the scene at the time of the incident.
“The convoy of His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, was not attacked. No member of the advance team or any other person sustained injury, and no life was lost. Dr. Alex urges the public to disregard rumours suggesting otherwise,” he added.

The spokesperson said security agencies had been alerted and investigations had commenced to identify the assailants.

The attack adds to growing concerns over rising insecurity in parts of Imo State, especially along routes leading to the airport.
