Tragedy struck in Pulka town, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, on Thursday, as three children lost their lives following the explosion of a grenade believed to have been abandoned by Boko Haram insurgents.
Security analyst, Zagazola Makama, confirmed the incident in a post on X on Friday. He identified the victims as Fati Dahiru, Aisha Ibrahim, and Fati Yakubu, who were reportedly playing with the device when it detonated at about 2:20 p.m.
According to Makama, a combined emergency response team comprising the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD-CBRN) unit, troops of Operation Hadin Kai, members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and local hunters, swiftly moved to the scene.
“The team cordoned off the area and conducted a thorough search for other dangerous devices but found none. The area was then declared safe,” he stated.
Makama added that the children were rushed to General Hospital, Gwoza, where medical personnel confirmed them dead. Their remains were subsequently released to their families for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution and immediately report any suspicious objects to security agencies to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
