The Federal Government has launched an investigation into the recent jailbreak at the Koton Karfe Custodial Centre in Kogi State.
Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, described the incident as unfortunate in a statement released by his Media Adviser, Babatunde Alao, on Monday in Abuja.
He assured that efforts were underway to recapture all escaped inmates using the service’s biometric database and advanced technology.
To assess the situation, the Minister directed the Acting Comptroller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, to visit the facility.
He also ordered a full audit to determine the circumstances that led to the breach.
“We are in control of the situation. Our personnel are on the ground in Kogi, and I have mandated a thorough review of the incident,” Tunji-Ojo stated.
Starnews reports that at least 12 inmates escaped during the jailbreak, while a custodial officer is reportedly missing.
