Ethnic violence: Group provides relief materials to displaced Ilaje people in Akwa Ibom

*Sen Tofowomo condemns violence, says I am already in talks with Akwa Senators on the matter*

The Ilaje Development Summit Group (IDSG) has provided relief materials for Ilaje people who were displaced in the aftermath of the ethnic violence in Ibeno Local Government of Akwa-Ibom State last week, which led to loss of lives and destruction of properties with many rendered homeless.

Speaking in Akure, Ondo State on the subject, the Executive Administrator of the organization, Rev. Sola Adebawo said the body is providing leadership in coordinating citizen’s response to the crises which has left many Ilaje settlers in Akwa-Ibom with lost livelihoods, homes and families.

An IDSG delegation, led by High Chief Eko Isinmidun Okolo, visited the displaced Ilaje citizens at EKet and other locations where they are being temporarily accommodated, to commiserate with the bereaved as well as provide succour to the hurting.

The group also provided relief materials to help alleviate the sufferings of the displaced Ilaje citizens.

The IDSG Executive Administrator lamented the unfortunate destruction of lives and properties of Ilaje people, who had hitherto coexisted peacefully with their hosts for many decades plying their fishing trade and contribution significantly to the development of the economy of Akwa-Ibom State.

He thanked the Eket Local Government authorities for their assistance in helping the displaced find shelter and making provisions for immediate sustainance.

He sued for peace while calling on the government of Akwa-Ibom State to investigate the matter and apply the law to perpertrators. He also called on the people of Ibeno Local Government to give peace a chance and allow people return to their homes.

Ilaje Development Summit Group is a citizen-led global organization of Ilaje sons and daughters in different walks of life, coordinating the sustainable development of Ilaje land in Ilaje Local Government of Ondo State.

Meanwhile, the senator representing Ondo South Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Nicholas Tofowomo, has said that he is currently in talks with his colleagues from Akwa Ibom to investigate the cause of the crisis and forestall future occurrence.

While speaking on the matter yesterday in Abuja during a press briefing, Senator Tofowomo condemned the violence, describing it as sad and unfortunate. “I condemn the ethnic violence in Ibeno Local Government of Akwa-Ibom State which affected my people from Ilaje and displaced many of them. It is sad and unfortunate. I am already in talks with Senators from Akwa Ibom State to investigate the cause of the crisis to forestall future occurrence”, he said.
