The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has dismissed claims that its chairman, Ola Olukoyede, met with a serving and a former governor just two days before they defected to the All Progressives Congress.
The allegation was made by Paul Ibe, spokesperson for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, during a television appearance. Ibe had alleged that Olukoyede and the Solicitor General held a meeting with the unnamed governors from the South-South region at a government lodge, shortly before their defection to the ruling party.
In response, EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, described the claim as baseless and politically motivated. He emphasized that Olukoyede remains neutral and has consistently maintained the agency’s non-partisan stance.
“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is outraged by the unfounded claims made by Paul Ibe,” the statement read. “The EFCC chairman did not and has never held any secret meeting with any governor, serving or former, concerning political defection.”
Oyewale further urged the public to disregard the speculation, describing it as a fabrication without any factual support.
Recent political developments have seen Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and his predecessor, Ifeanyi Okowa, leave the Peoples Democratic Party for the APC. The governor of Akwa Ibom has also indicated plans to defect.
