The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has urged Nigerians to treat the naira with respect as it represents the country’s economy.
In a statement on May 13, 2025, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale explained that the crackdown on the abuse of the national currency aligns with the commission’s responsibility to enforce economic laws.
He noted that the naira is an essential symbol of Nigeria’s economic strength and must not be misused in any way, including actions like spraying, tearing, or defacing the currency.
Oyewale acknowledged the positive change in public behavior toward handling the naira and called for this attitude to continue.
The EFCC spokesperson emphasized that the commission is committed to combating financial corruption and will continue to uphold laws such as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act.
According to Oyewale, the EFCC is focused on ensuring the respect of the naira to protect the economy from negative effects caused by its abuse.
He reiterated that the commission’s efforts are designed to foster growth in Nigeria’s economy through the proper handling of its national currency.
