DELSU Rusticates Female Student For Filming Dying Colleague At School Clinic

The management of Delta State University, Abraka, has suspended a 200-level Biotechnology student, Ezi Ugoma, after she recorded and uploaded a video of a dying student at the institution’s health centre on TikTok.

According to an official letter dated October 21, 2025, Ugoma was found guilty of breaching her matriculation oath and engaging in conduct the university described as “gross misconduct.” The viral footage, posted on her TikTok page, reportedly showed a fellow student who was said to have collapsed after a suspected abortion-related complication.

The decision, signed by Principal Assistant Registrar (Students’ Affairs) Ughwumiakpor A., on behalf of the Deputy Registrar, stated that Ugoma has been rusticated for four semesters beginning from the 2025/2026 academic year. She will only be allowed to return to campus in the 2027/2028 session.

“After due consideration of the Students’ Disciplinary Committee report, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Samuel O. Asagba, approved the recommendation that you be rusticated for four semesters,” the letter read.

The university said her action violated student conduct rules and constituted an “inappropriate filming with a mobile handset” of a medical emergency.
It added that the decision had been communicated to her guardians and relevant school authorities.

Sources said Ugoma’s stepfather reacted angrily to the development, allegedly telling her to “forget school” and return to the village, insisting he would no longer support her education.

Media personality, Oseni Rufai condemned the punishment in a post on X, calling for the university to review the disciplinary action.
“Do not allow this young lady’s future to be shattered and cut short,” he appealed to the Vice-Chancellor.

Rufai argued that Ugoma’s video caption, which advised young women to avoid abortions, showed that she intended to send a moral message rather than mock the deceased student.

He urged the institution to temper justice with mercy and reinstate her.
