The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed disappointment over the mass defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and other party leaders and members to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Acting PDP National Chairman Umar Damagum described the defections as painful, especially considering the party’s unwavering support for them.
Speaking in Abuja during a ceremony to present a certificate of return to Jude Ezenwafor, the PDP’s governorship candidate for the Anambra election, Damagum said, “It is very sad and unfortunate. If any state should have stayed loyal, it should have been Delta, considering the support the party has given them.”
He emphasized that the defections were a personal decision, and that the party had always treated Delta with fairness and support, from the emergence of the governor to the vice-presidential candidacy of the state’s former leader. “It’s painful because we did nothing but good for them. We least expected this from them,” Damagum added.
Despite the setback, Damagum reassured party members that the PDP had weathered similar challenges in the past and remained resilient. He confirmed that the leadership was already taking steps to set up a caretaker committee in Delta to take over the party’s structures in the state.
Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Damagum noted that the focus should not be on the number of governors a party holds but on the future of Nigeria. He urged all PDP members to unite and work towards rescuing the country, emphasizing that no challenge is insurmountable.
