A coalition of Northern women lawyers has called on Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II to submit a formal statement to police authorities or risk sparking a mass protest in Kano.
The demand follows the Inspector General of Police’s order for the former Emir to assist in investigations surrounding a deadly Sallah procession previously banned by law enforcement.
Barrister Nafisa Abba, who chairs the Northern Women Lawyers Congress, said the group expects Sanusi to respect the legal process and support the investigation into the tragic event.
“We’ve consistently stood against injustice in the region—from advocating for rape victims to calling for accountability in the Uromi killings,” she said.
“This situation is no different. The loss of lives at the Sallah event—despite a clear ban—demands answers.”
Abba emphasized the legitimacy of the Congress, asserting that its members are licensed professionals, not anonymous agitators. “We’re a recognised legal body. As the Chair, I’m a member of the Kano Bar. We’re not hiding. But those speaking for Sanusi should also identify themselves,” she challenged.
She concluded by warning that the group would take to the streets if their call was ignored. “No one is above the law—not even a traditional ruler. Immunity isn’t a privilege granted to an Emir.”
