Former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, has denied reports that his convoy was attacked by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State.
The claim was made during a live interview on Sunday, June 8, 2025, by Senator Ali Ndume, who represents Borno State in the National Assembly.
He had told the TV audience that Buratai’s team was ambushed near a military base and that a heavy exchange of gunfire took place between soldiers and the attackers.
Ndume had used the alleged incident to express worry about the security situation in the Northern region, describing it as deeply troubling.
He suggested that several military assets were damaged during the supposed clash between the soldiers escorting Buratai and the insurgents.
However, Buratai, who also served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, quickly denied the story.
Speaking through retired Army spokesman SK Usman, he said there was no such attack and that he had not been anywhere near Borno in recent days.
Instead, he said he spent the Eid holiday peacefully in Abuja, surrounded by friends, family, and well-wishers.
Buratai described the reports as false and the work of people trying to mislead the public.
He insisted that he has remained in the Federal Capital Territory and has not come under any form of threat.
He also thanked those who reached out to him following the rumours, saying their concern and support meant a lot to him.
The former Army chief said the story was entirely made up and aimed at creating fear and confusion among Nigerians.
He urged people to be more careful about the kind of information they believe and spread, especially when it comes to national security.
