…60% of Candidates Secure Five Credits Including English, Maths
The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the results of the 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) for internal candidates, with 60.26 percent of students recording at least five credits, including English Language and Mathematics.
Announcing the results on Wednesday at the NECO headquarters in Minna, Niger State, the Registrar, Prof. Ibrahim Dantani Wushishi, said 818,492 candidates out of 1,358,339 who sat for the exam met the benchmark for admission into tertiary institutions.
Wushishi explained that 84.26 percent of candidates secured five credits and above in any subjects, while only 60 percent obtained credits in both English and Mathematics, which remain compulsory for further education.
The Registrar highlighted a significant drop in examination malpractice, with 3,878 cases recorded this year compared to 10,094 in 2024, representing a 61.58 percent reduction.
However, he disclosed that 38 schools across 13 states were involved in widespread malpractice, while nine supervisors were blacklisted for aiding cheating or dereliction of duty.
“The council is committed to curbing examination malpractice through improved monitoring, the use of technology, and collaboration with stakeholders,” Wushishi said.
He added that the results were released 54 days after the conduct of the last paper, in line with NECO’s commitment to timely release. A total of 1,622 candidates with special needs, including those with hearing and visual impairments, also participated in the exam.
Wushishi further noted that NECO had revised its curriculum, reducing the number of examinable subjects to 38 to enhance efficiency and reduce delays in future results.
The 2025 results reflect a steady improvement in performance compared to previous years, but officials say the fight against malpractice and the need to raise overall academic standards remain a priority.
