The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that the petition for the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti, representing the Kogi Central Senatorial District, does not fulfil the criteria outlined in Section 69(a) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).
This statement was issued in a brief announcement on the Commission’s X handle on Thursday afternoon.
This marks the second occasion on which the electoral body has raised concerns regarding the Akpoti-Uduaghan recall petition.
Last month, INEC initially flagged the petition as inadequate but subsequently reconsidered after the petitioners provided additional addresses.
“As stipulated in Clause 2(a) of the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines for Recall 2024, a letter has been sent to notify the Senator regarding the receipt of the petition, which has been delivered to her official address,” stated Sam Olumekun, the national commissioner and chairman of the Information & Voter Education Committee at INEC.
