Armed bandits attacked Kiri High School in Aiyetoro Kiri, located in the Kabba Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, in the early hours of Wednesday, November 26, 2025.
According to information confirmed to Egbe Mekun Parrot, the attackers stormed the community and attempted to abduct students from the school. However, members of the Kiri Vigilante Group mobilised swiftly and confronted the armed men, successfully rescuing all students who had been seized during the attack.
Community sources told reporters that no student remains in captivity, crediting the “timely and coordinated response” of the local security team for preventing another mass school abduction.
The rescue operation, however, came at a tragic cost. One vigilante member was killed while defending the community. A resident also reported that a Hausa man lost his life during the incident.
The attempted abduction in Kogi comes amid a surge of mass kidnappings across Nigeria’s north-central region. Since mid-November, more than 400 people—mostly schoolchildren—have been abducted in states including Niger, Kebbi, Kwara, and Borno. Some victims have either been freed or managed to escape.
On November 17, at least 24 schoolgirls were kidnapped from the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Kebbi State.
Four days later, on November 21, gunmen stormed St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri village, Niger State, abducting more than 300 pupils and staff.
The United Nations has condemned the rising wave of school kidnappings, urging the Nigerian government to take “all lawful measures” to stop the attacks and bring perpetrators to justice.
As of press time, security agencies in Kogi State have not issued a formal statement on the latest incident.
