Former Minister of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, Chief Nduese Essien, has dismissed rumors that he is joining the All Progressives Congress (APC).
This comes after Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom recently left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the APC.
In a statement, Essien clarified that he attended the governor’s defection event to show support as an Akwa Ibom native, not as an endorsement of the APC.
He also reiterated that he has not switched parties and remains neutral in politics since stepping down in 2014.
Essien praised Governor Eno’s leadership, calling it inclusive and mature.
He acknowledged the governor’s decision to join the APC as a strategic move to secure the state’s future, given the ongoing internal crises within the PDP.
Essien stated that Eno’s decision would help the state align with the federal government, ensuring stability.
However, Essien expressed concern over the governor’s efforts to pressure both state and federal lawmakers, as well as local government chairmen, to join the APC.
He argued that this was against the spirit of inclusive governance, emphasizing that elected officials should have the freedom to make their own political decisions.
Essien also criticized the lack of support from Senate President Godswill Akpabio for PDP members, stating that APC federal appointments have largely excluded those not aligned with the party.
He urged political leaders in the state to respect different viewpoints and focus on fostering peace, stability, and progress.
In closing, Essien reaffirmed that his priority remains the unity and development of Akwa Ibom, urging all political leaders to manage their differences with respect.
