ADC slams Tinubu over power sector woes, accuses Presidency of broken promises

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing his administration of failing to deliver on its promise of ensuring stable electricity across Nigeria. The party expressed frustration over the lack of significant progress in the power sector, despite repeated commitments made during the 2023 election campaign.

In a post shared on Sunday via X (formerly Twitter), the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, voiced concern over what he described as a worsening situation in electricity supply, increased tariff burdens, and repeated grid breakdowns under President Tinubu’s leadership.

According to the ADC, the President’s vow to provide round-the-clock power within four years of assuming office is yet to show results more than halfway into his tenure. Instead of progress, the party pointed to what it called widespread energy hardship, particularly in rural areas where access to electricity remains virtually nonexistent.

“Electricity tariffs have increased by over 240% since President Tinubu took office, yet millions of Nigerians continue to endure poor and inconsistent power supply,” the statement read.

The party also highlighted repeated failures of the national grid—reportedly collapsing a dozen times since the start of the administration—as evidence of neglect in the sector. It noted that the much-publicized Band A–E classification of electricity users has done little to improve delivery, with many households still limited to just a few hours of power each day.

ADC lamented that no substantial reforms or a visible blueprint for overhauling the sector have been presented so far. It further accused the government of ignoring the daily realities of citizens who rely on fuel-powered generators or mobile charging kiosks to meet basic needs.

The party went on to remind President Tinubu of his campaign declaration: “If I don’t give you electricity, don’t vote for me,” adding that Nigerians are taking note ahead of the 2027 general elections.
