Authorities in Takhar, northern Afghanistan, arrested 14 individuals on May 8, 2025, after they were found playing musical instruments and singing during a private gathering. The arrest followed the Taliban’s strict rules, which have banned music and singing since they took control of the country in 2021. According to police, the group gathered late at night in a private house, causing a disturbance in the area.
Under the Taliban’s rule, music and public entertainment have been prohibited, with schools for music closed, instruments destroyed, and performances banned in public spaces like restaurants, weddings, and media. Music is now viewed as a “moral corruption” by the authorities, and musicians are encouraged to focus on religious chants and Islamic poetry instead.
Despite these restrictions, some people still play music in private settings, especially in women-only spaces. Many musicians have left the country to seek work and refuge abroad after losing their careers due to the Taliban’s ban. The 14 arrested individuals are currently under investigation, according to officials.
