The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association (PENGASSAN) and the National Union of Electricity Employees have asked their members to join the nationwide strike declared by the two labour centres – the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria to protest the assault on NLC President, Joe Ajaero. The National Economic Council has resolved to review the status of the ownership structure of the power Distribution Companies in the country. The decision was taken at Thursday’s meeting of the council, which was presided over by Vice-President Yemi. Licence cancellation: FG queries BEDC, 6 other Discos, gives deadline
Power distribution companies have till December 7 to submit their written responses providing reasons why their licences should not be cancelled, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission declared on Tuesday. In an updated document on the notice of hearing on the petitions by Discos on the Minor Review and Minimum Remittance Order dated November 5, 2019, and obtained from the commission in Abuja, the power sector regulator also outlined additional expectations from the Discos. Nigeria’s electricity market has been nose-diving since the distribution and generation arms of the sector were privatised in 2013 and is currently on a sick bed, the Transmission Company of Nigeria has said. Electricity generation drops to 3,231MW
The nation’s power generation fell to 3,231 megawatts on Wednesday, more than a week after the latest system collapse. Data from the Nigeria Electricity System Operator, an arm of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, showed that generation stood at 4,338.9MW as of 6.00 am on April 20.
